Becoming a Certified Graphic Designer
I’m working toward becoming a professional member of the GDC – Society of Graphic Designers of Canada.
For those who aren’t aware, to join the association requires an extensive portfolio review. Acceptance will allow me, among other things, the privilege of adding the coveted letter designation CGD – certified graphic designer – to my name. It’s really a lot of work. I’ve considered those “what if” or “if only” scenarios, listened and weighed the arguments for and against and finally decided: Let’s do this. I spent a Saturday morning attending a GDC portfolio workshop over at Andrew Boardman’s Manoverboard office. Enlightening, informative, in many ways the workshop confirmed my decision.
The Winnipeg design community is small, yet when I began my business in 2001, I hardly knew anyone. Over a decade later, I think the biggest reason for joining the GDC is community. And the camaraderie amongst peers and professionals. I’m looking forward that to connection.
Deadline for submissions is Monday, January 23, 2012, 5:00 pm
Why did you join?

Matt – Excellent choice! You’ll definitely feel at home in the GDC community, they offer a bevy (cool word, eh?) of events, workshops, social gatherings. You’re sure to find something that suits your style.
Plus, the network will allow you to branch out and reach new prospects you may not have had the opportunity to connect with otherwise.
And the distinction doesn’t hurt either. Most trades/professions/specialties have recognized associations – I think of my wife who works in ultrasound, she has to belong to at least 2 – It should be no different for freelancers. It tells out prospects that we’re trained, good at what we do, and recognized as such among our peers in the industry.
I guess I joined for all of the same reasons you did. In the 2-3 years I’ve been in it, I’ve recently seen my involvement grow (a little). Which is pretty cool. I think as you invest more time into something, you should be expected to contribute in proportion. I look forward to more involvement in the GDC.
Cheers,
Carson D. Samson, CGD (Ha!)
